GPs dismayed

A greenhorn protests

Sir, As a newly qualified GP I am dismayed that the Government’s relentless pursuit of extended opening hours (report, Feb 5) has nothing to do with holistic and quality care but everything to do with privatisation.

The Government’s own survey showed patients are overwhelmingly satisfied with access. The current proposals will have a destabilising effect on small practices such as my own, paving the way for private providers. My patients don’t want to be seen in a polyclinic but by a doctor they know and trust.

I am fighting for the principles underlying general practice and never dreamt a Labour government would be intent on destroying them.
