Goodman Ray, which has offices in London and Brighton, is a specialist in the field of children and family law, with an emphasis on international children law cases, surrogacy, adoption and matrimonial work.

Recent work includes successfully acting for an appellant surrogate who was also the biological mother of a baby boy, in a case in which the Court of Appeal for the first time considered the consent requirements of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008.

The court looked at the requirement that the surrogate must have freely and and unconditionally consented to a parental order in circumstances where there had been suggestions of coercion and pressure during the court proceedings, and concluded that it had not been satisfied. The court therefore set aside the parental order that had previously been made in favour of the respondents.

The firm also successfully acted to prevent an application made by a London borough for the authorisation of arrangements that would have resulted in a 15-year-old girl being deprived of her liberty while residing at a children’s home. The application was opposed by the girl’s guardian, represented by the firm, and her mother.
