Gongs for all?

We can’t give medals to everyone

Sir, Dr John Turner in his letter demanding a decoration for Bomber Command (Jan 30) repeats the old chestnut that these aircrew were in some way uniquely snubbed in not having a special medal.

In fact, all aircrew who flew operationally over Europe before D-Day received the Aircrew Europe Star; thereafter the France & Germany Star was awarded. No campaign medals were awarded to any individuals on the basis of the arm of service they served in — all were theatre awards — and to make exceptions now would be to encourage an avalanche of “what about us?” claims.
