Going backwards

Sir, Can I suggest that the driving test be altered to include the skill of driving some distance in reverse, so as to help city motorists navigate country roads.

In the narrow lanes close to my home I often meet another car. We cannot pass, so one of us must reverse. The other car is only 50ft from a passing place, for me the distance is several hundred yards. Naturally I expect the driver to give way and point to the passing place behind him (or her). He looks at me with a blank expression and does nothing, so I reverse instead.

I don’t think this is sheer bloody- mindedness, the driver simply has no confidence in reversing any distance. But it is driving me round the bend.
