The survey, the first to be carried out since the dotcom crash of 2001, found that software accounts for an increasing part of the city’s economic growth.
It also highlights some significant challenges facing companies in the sector.
Employment has fallen by 50% from 4,000 in 1997 to 2,000 last year and the study found that Glasgow lagged behind Manchester on per-capita performance indicators.
The study, by technology consultancy Targeting Innovation, showed that the past three years have been volatile for software, but there is an increasing trend of profitability and stability.
Employment is now growing rapidly in the software sub-sector, up 20% year on year.
