The firm was founded in 1890 by the Republican corporate attorney John Bicknel and the Democratic litigator Walter Trask. In 1897, Judge James Gibson joined the firm, which six years later merged with another law firm, belonging to the former Los Angeles city attorney William Ellsworth Dunn and the assistant city attorney Albert Crutcher, giving the firm the name that it still uses today.

Gibson Dunn secured an award of more than $1.65 billion for Iraq Telecom, a joint venture between Agility Public Warehousing Company KSCP and Orange, in an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration against Korek Telecom Company, an Iraqi company headquartered in Erbil, and its chairman Saber Sirwan Barzani.

The firm is defending UBS in a Competition Appeal Tribunal case brought by more than 100 foreign exchange businesses. The case relates to alleged collusive conduct by UBS and five other banks to manipulate the foreign exchange market between 2003 and 2013.

At the time of writing the firm was acting as global litigation co-ordination counsel for Credit Suisse in defending proceedings brought by Bidzina Ivanishvili, the former prime minister of Georgia and billionaire, his family and related corporate structures in multiple jurisdictions.
