Denim has had a makeover – no longer just for jeans, it is being smartened up into doable daywear

Above, Gemma Soames explains the best ways to wear spring's denim

We have a lot to thank the 1970s for this spring: forgiving trousers, carb-friendly tunic tops and day-brightening colours among them. But the best bit of our current penchant for all things Woodstock-inspired are the denim options on offer. Banish all thoughts of distressed hot pants or a Geldof-at-Glastonbury look — this season, we’re talking the sort of denim that invites a bit of dressing up.

Osman Yousefzada showed directional dresses with delicious give on his catwalk — Gwyneth Paltrow has already bought in. Plenty more have followed his lead with dresses and also playsuits — great for night (add a white blazer and you’re set) or day (pair with gladiator sandals and you’re ready for a swanky spring lunch).

For the yummy-mummy look, check out Derek Lam, whose minimal approach elevates wide-legged jeans to the sort of sophistication normally associated with well-tailored trousers.

The cult label G-Star is also in on the act. Obsessed with detail, cut and finish, it produces denim that’s far from your standard fare. “Jeans are good basics,” says Shubhankar Ray, the global brand director, “but adding a design element elevates them for smarter, dressed-up occasions. Experiment with looser or tighter fits, mix in some tailoring and you’ll get a tough elegance that seems totally modern.”

Alternatively, there’s the Linda McCartney-style soft 1970s look, as seen on her daughter Stella’s catwalk. In which case, your dressed-up denim will come in loose styles and washed-out shades.

However you style it, denim is this season’s winner. Warm, wearable and affordable, it’s a total fashion friend. Now it’s pretty chic, too.
