What do firefighters do?
An obvious question, perhaps, but they don’t just put out fires. Approximately one callout in five is actually to fires, and much of firefighters’ responsibilities lie in advising the public on fire safety and avoidance. They also enforce fire safety standards and co-ordinate fire safety campaigns.

What skills are required?
You must be physically fit and able to pass tough medical and eye examinations. You are likely to be subjected to psychometric aptitude tests. You need to demonstrate excellent teamwork and communication skills and an ability to work under severe stress, as well as having a high level of discipline. While formal qualifications are not essential, some study of engineering or material sciences might be useful.
What opportunities are there?
All members of the Fire Service start as firefighters. Promotion is well structured and based on individual merit and examinations. Although firefighters may spend time doing office work (for example, as community fire safety officers), it is vital to maintain a high level of fitness ready for returning to active duty. Contact your local authority fire brigade for details of vacancies and more information.
