Sir, You report that sheep are being sealed in polytunnels to enable analysis of the air before and after they have eaten, and that researchers are considering genetically engineering the digestive system of cattle (“How to stop cows burping”, July 10).

Given that oil and “natural” gas are running out why not just capture the methane for use as fuel?

Sir, It may be that if cows are fed grass with a high sugar content, they will belch less and reduce methane emissions.
