Sir, Mr James Harbridge (letter, June 27) comments on Andrew Murray that “tennis was always exempt from such gamesmanship”.
According to my copy of Stephen Potter’s book The Theory and Practice of Gamesmanship (Penguin, 1962), gamesmanship in fact originated on the tennis court, on June 8, 1931, when Dr Cyril Joad made his famous request: “Kindly say clearly, please, whether the ball was in or out.”
