Funny girls on top

Laurie Kilmartin

Women in comedy are a minority but American women comics are seldom seen on these shores. Kilmartin was the exception when she roared into town from the West Coast to ruffle feathers with her no-holds-barred material on rape, race and the war on terror. Run finished.

Janey Godley

In her own words, the Glaswegian Godley looks more like a cleaning lady who has stumbled onstage than a stand-up, but it’s good to see the middle-class, white-boy mould being broken. Smirnoff Underbelly, last show tonight, 10pm.

Katherine Jakeways

One reviewer compared Jakeways’s show to Little Britain. It’s a neat analogy but doesn’t quite capture her talent for scratching at society’s ugly scars. This year, she has shown that boys don’t have the monopoly on bleak, unsettling humour. Assembly Rooms, until Aug 30, 6.30pm.

Gavin and Gavin

As well as doing comedy, sisters Lauretta and Sharon are also straight actors. These skills have ensured that their sketch shows have sold out for the last three years. Assembly Rooms, until Aug 30, 2.45pm.

Joanna Neary

Neary’s sketches have been described as halfway between a Radio 4 play and sitting next to the mad woman on the bus. This year’s show climaxes with Neary performing a Pan’s People routine to Harry Nilsson’s song Without You. It’s very wrong but very funny. Run ended.
