Sir, You report that it was “a huge shock to crash from a sweltering average 64F in July to 61F in August . . .” (report, Sept 2). It doesn’t sound like much of a shock to me — could this be the curse of the average yet again?
It reminds me of the psychology lecturer who was carrying on a feud with the statistics lecturer. Clearly scornful of his colleague’s methods, he said: “The statistician will tell you that if he is sitting with one foot in a bucket of freezing water and the other foot in a bucket of boiling water then he is, on average, quite comfortable.”
