8.39pmNovak Djokovic extended his Grand Slam win streak to 24 matches by beating Nicolas Devilder of France 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in the third round. Djokovic has won the last three Grand Slam titles, and he needs four more victories at Roland Garros to become the third player to hold all four major titles at the same time. Rod Laver was the last to do it, in 1969. The 25-year-old Serb can also complete a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open. Last year, he lost to Roger Federer in the semifinals.

5.42pm Match update Nicolas Mahut takes a break and makes it count to draw level in his third-round tie against Roger Federer. It is the first time the world No 3 has dropped a set against the Frenchman. What must Mahut’s wife be going through as her tennis loyalties are spluit down the middle today?

5.37pm Sloane Stephens, the only teenager left in the women’s draw, will face Sam Stosur for a place in the quarter-finals. The reigning US Open champion slugged her way into the last 16 as she beat Nadia Petrova in a baseline battle.

“I knew what I wanted to do, I stuck to the plan and was able to...execute it very well,” Stosur said of her 6-3, 6-3 win. “I thought today was very, very solid and a good match.”

BRITISH SKY BROADCASTING LTD

5.32pm Match update Roger Federer might have taken the first set against Nicolas Mahut but the world No 3 has failed to force the breakthrough in the second set. Will a tie-break be required or will Federer take a two-set lead or will Mahut draw level? I wonder what Mahut’s wife, Minette, is thinking about this keenly-fought battle.

5.18pm Svetlana Kuznetsova, the world No 28, has been reacting to her 6-1, 6-2 third-round win over Agnieszka Radwanska, the third seed.

“It was very important to dictate, and I think I have done it well,” the 2009 French Open champion said. “I fought for every ball against her.

“When you look at her when she plays, she doesn’t have some great shots, like overpower. She moves well, she reads the game unbelievably, and she plays on the counterattack very well.”

5.02pm Sloane Stephens’ mother, Sybil Smith, has been talking about what she thinks is her 19-year-old daughter’s biggest strength following her win over Mathilde Johnassen.

“Probably her mental fortitude. She’s a really happy-go-lucky kind of person, and she doesn’t let things get her down. She’s resilient. She’s incredibly resilient,” Smith said of Stephens, who has reduced her sugar intake from fizzy drinks and sweets.

Here’s what Brad Gilbert reckons on Twitter: “fedfan having a pretty easy time of it with Marathon man Mahut , he has had very routine draw for the 1st 3 matches.”

BRITISH SKY BROADCASTING LTD

4.42pm Match update Will Nicolas Mahut’s wife be smiling? Her husband, Nicolas, trails Roger Federer, her favourite tennis player, 2-5 in the first set. Meanwhile, on Court 1 Juan Martin Del Potro, the No 9 seed, leads Marin Cilic, the No 21 seed, 6-3, 1-1 while over on Court 2, Andreas Seppi is in danger of being pegged back by Fernando Verdassco, the No 14 seed. The Italian leads 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 2-4.

4.38pm Tomas Berdych has said that he was not suprised to have been given a stern examination by Kevin Anderson as the Czech recorded his first five-set win at Roland Garros.

“Today I was expecting a really, really tough one because he’s coming up. He’s playing well. It was a really, really close game today.”

Berdych has also said that he wants to work with Ivan Lendl, a fellow Czech and the coach of Andy Murray. “It would be an honour. But it’s not only just for me to say if I want him or not. But definitely if we could be together then, of course, it could be nice,” the No 7 seed said.

4.25pm Roger Federer and Nicolas Mahut are out on court. I wonder if Mrs Mahut has been persuaded to support her husband, along with the Roland Garros partisan crowd, rather than her usual favourite tennis player, Federer.

4.18pm In addition to asking whether you prefer to use Facebook or Twitter whern it comes to social media, Maria Sharpova has been talking about her chances of finally winning the Roland Garros title with Serena Williams falling to Virginie Razzano in the first round.

“If you get to the quarter-finals, no matter who you play, you have to play at a high level,” Sharapova said after her 6-1, 6-1 second-round win over Ayumi Morita of Japan. “You can’t worry about if it’s Serena or somebody else across the net. You have to beat them.”

4.10pm A composed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga gave his home crowd plenty to cheer as he dispatched Fabio Fognini, the flamboyant Italian, 7-5 6-4 6-4. on Phillipe Chatrier. At one stage, the world number 45 berated the umpire and the partisan crowd, but Tsonga remained clam and focused to seal a last-16 meeting with either Gilles Simon, a fellow Frenchman, or Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka.

3.30pm Svetlana Kuznetsova rolled back the years to defeat Agnieszka Radwanska, the No 3 seed, who admitted that the 2009 champion had been the better player.

“She was just playing very aggressive on both sides,” Radwanska said . “She just had [an] answer for everything I was trying to do.

“It’s always disappointing when losing in the first week of a Grand Slam, that’s for sure. Today I didn’t play bad, she was just playing unbelievable.”

3.15pm Maria Sharapova put the question out there and Sloane Stephens is clear about her social media preference. The 19-year-old American said after she defeated Mathilde Johansson of France 6-3, 6-2: “I’m excited because now I’m going to have more Twitter followers.”

Stephens added: “It’s always good to be noticed and recognised for sport. I think being up there with Venus and Serena, that’s awesome. I’m happy that I’m improving.”

3.00pm Ana Ivanovic has been reflecting on her defeat at the hands of Sara Errani: “I was really pleased the way I started. I was really aggressive and I created a lot of opportunities for myself. Then I felt in the second and third sets she started raising her level a lot and putting a lot more on the ball.

“Also on my serve, I felt I had a great rhythm on it, but I just wasn’t making enough. My serve percentage was so poor. I think that was something that determined a little bit the tone for the last two sets.”

Maria Sharpova has opened the social media debate on @rolandgarros: “Sharapova told her post-match press conference today that she likes Facebook better than Twitter. Do you agree? #RG12”

“It is one of my best,” Errani said. “She is not top 10 now but she has always been among the top players, so I am very happy.”

1.48pm Maria Sharapova reaches the third round of the French Open after cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Japan’s Ayumi Morita. The Russian’s bid to claim the one grand slam title that has eluded her to date remains on course.

1.30pm Some reaction from the big shock of the day so far with Ana Ivanovic suffering a shock 6-1, 5-7, 3-6 defeat at the hands of Sara Errani. The 2008 champion has taken full responsibility for failing to beat the Italian claycour specialist.

“I was making some unforced errors when I was too flat-footed,” Ivanovic said. “Some double faults really came out of nowhere. Maybe I wasn’t using my legs enough.”

12.53pm: Kuznetsova will be a bit annoyed with herself there: she had three break points but failed to take them and it’s back to 3-1. Would still expect her to see this through though.

Here’s what Brad Gilbert reckons on Twitter: “Wow Kuzy is all over A shell skocked Aggi Rad this is the best i have seen her look since 2009 French.”

12.48pm: Radwanska is getting a pasting from Kuznetsova, to be frank. SK is already a set up and now a break to the good in the second set, cruising along at 3-0 up. Radwanska does not look anything like the third seed here.

@neilharmantimes: The Berd is going to have to go to five to stay in @rolandgarros. Anderson takes the 3rd on a TB.

“Difficult to celebrate ... when you are in the middle of the tournament, but sure, I’m going to go for dinner with the team,” Nadal said.

10.18am Andy Murray has hit back at Virgina Wade after she labelled him a “drama queen” as he beat Jarkko Nieminen yesterday. The world No 4 looked set to retire through injury having awoken with a back spasm before turning the match around to claim a remarkable 1-6 6-4 6-1 6-2 win.

“I don’t really see what the point would be in play-acting, going down 6-1, 4-2. I don’t really see what the point would be in putting yourself in a position where you’re about to lose, and stop the match, and then somehow manage to turn it around,” Murray said.
