French film season: how to book

The Times and Carte Noire present a season of some of the best French films, as voted by you. Your final selection in the Times Online reader poll was La Belle et la Bête, and over the next few weeks, that film, and five others, will be showing at Picturehouse cinemas around the country. You can get free tickets to any and all of the screenings, including this week’s programme.

8 Women

A sensational-looking whodunnit – with musical interludes – showcasing the talents of eight of France’s greatest actresses.

La Belle et la Bête

Jean Cocteau’s lyrical and intensely beautiful adaptation of the classic fairytale. The art of film-making at its very best.

Le Dîner de Cons

A black comedy in which a smug practical joke enacted at a weekly dinner party backfires cruelly on one of its perpetrators.

Le Goût des Autres

When a wealthy industrialist falls in love with a theatre actress, he embarks on a sublimely comic programme of self-improvement.

La Haine

Powerful, intense and human, Mathieu Kassovitz’s story of three disaffected young men buzzes with a volatile mix of fury and dark humour.

Ma Femme est une Actrice

A subtle and self-referential comedy directed by Yvan Attal, who also stars alongside his real-life wife, Charlotte Gainsbourg.
