Freddie Mercury’s house on sale for £30m — but fans can’t see listing

The late Queen singer’s Georgian-style mansion has eight bedrooms, an art deco dressing room and Japanese-inspired garden

Freddie Mercury’s home in west London is up for sale but prospective buyers will need deep pockets to even see the Georgian mansion.

The Kensington home of the late Queen singer is on the market for £30 million but there is no online listing.

Mercury bought Garden Lodge in 1980 and lived there until his death in 1991. Mary Austin, a friend of the singer, inherited the house. Its layout and details of square footage will not be disclosed due to privacy concerns, according to the estate agent, Knight Frank.

“It was really only ever my house in name only,” Austin, 72, told Bloomberg. “I had worked on the house with [Mercury] and for him, and it will always be his. It was his dream, it was his vision.”

Austin said she had been living alone in the house after her two children moved out. She then “realised the time had come” to sell the home.

Two photos of the interior have been released, showing the hallway and dining room.

Knight Frank has said it will vet prospective applicants to ensure they have the funds to purchase the property. It is hoped that this will deter fans from posing as potential buyers.

A spokesman for Knight Frank said: “A decision has been made not to put details online for privacy reasons. And we have processes in place when it comes to interested parties.”

Austin sold 1,500 items from the house at a six-day auction at Sotheby’s in September 2023, raising £39,435,000. Part of the proceeds of the auction were donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity founded by the surviving members of Queen to fund global HIV/Aids initiatives, and the Elton John Aids Foundation.

The garden door of the home, which is covered in tributes and love notes, sold for £412,000 at auction.

Garden Lodge was built in 1907 for the married artists Constance Halford and Cecil Rea. In 1980 Mercury bought the west London house from a member of the Hoare banking family, offering the asking price of £500,000 while viewing the property.
