Frank Lampard has been ruled out of England’s friendly with Brazil.
The Chelsea midfielder suffered an injury to his left thigh in training today and will fly back from Doha tonight. Fabio Capello, the England manager, has decided not to call in a replacement, leaving him with a 21-man squad for the match.
“We can confirm that Frank Lampard picked up an injury to his left thigh whilst training today and will be returning home this evening,” an FA statement read. “There will be no further call-ups to the squad.”
It remains to be seen whether Lampard will miss Chelsea’s next match, against Wolverhampton Wanderers, on November 21.
Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Ashley Cole, David James, Theo Walcott, Glen Johnson and Emile Heskey did not make the trip to Qatar after being ruled out through injury. David Beckham and Aaron Lennon have withdrawn from the squad in the past week.
