FIVE teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after four people died in a car crash at an accident blackspot in Powys.

Up to six vehicles were moving in convoy along a remote stretch of the A470 near Storey Arms in the Brecon Beacons at the time of the accident. Two men died at the scene and two women, who were among five people taken to hospital, died yesterday from their injuries.

The crash happened shortly before 10.15pm on Friday. The arrested men are aged 17 and 18.

Nigel Shiel, from Brecon, arrived on the scene shortly after the crash and used his headlights to provide the emergency services with more light.

He told the BBC: “You could tell by the wreckage itself that it was a very large impact... I got out of my car and approached some of the youths walking around. They seemed a bit shocked which is understandable.”

Two vehicles were involved in the crash, a black Volkswagen Golf estate, which was not part of the convoy, and a green Volkswagen Golf.

The driver of the green Golf and a male passenger, both from Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, died at the scene. Three passengers were injured, including one of the women who subsequently died.

A female passenger in the black Golf estate also died yesterday. The car’s driver remains in a serious condition in hospital.
