A North Sea veteran has joined the board of Jersey Oil and Gas. Les Thomas was most recently the chief executive of Ithaca Energy and oversaw its $2 billion acquisition of Chevron assets in the basin.

He left the company last year and is becoming a non-executive director at the Aim-listed Jersey Oil and Gas.

The exploration group is working on a field development plan for the Greater Buchan Area, which is thought to contain at least 190 million barrels of oil.

Thomas, 64, has spent about 35 years in the oil and gas industry since graduating with degrees in civil engineering and petroleum engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. His career has included eight years on the board of John Wood Group and more than two decades with Marathon Oil.

He is an independent director of Repsol Sinopec Resources UK, which has a large UK North Sea portfolio, and a non-executive director at Avingtrans, an Aim-listed engineering and manufacturing company.

Commenting on the appointment, Marcus Stanton, chairman of Jersey Oil and Gas, said: “Throughout his career to date, he has helped oil companies to develop projects successfully, deploying subsurface, commercial and project management expertise.

“His wealth of experience in the UK North Sea leading upstream and services businesses will be of significant value to Jersey Oil and Gas as we progress our Greater Buchan Area development project and take the company through its next phase of growth.”

Separately, one of Scotland’s most senior restructuring and insolvency lawyers has moved firms. Yvonne Brady, 58, has joined Morton Fraser from Shepherd and Wedderburn. She will be taking on a newly created role as head of strategy for restructuring and insolvency.
