Forbidden museum

Sir, I fully agree with Philip Collins (Notebook, Aug 25) about the inept way Italian heritage is administered. Two years ago I tried to visit the Anzio Beachhead Museum with my wife. We had visited the British war cemetery, as my wife’s uncle had been killed in the Anzio landings and is buried there, and we wanted to visit the museum too. Beforehand I had looked at the museum’s website to check the opening times but it didn’t work fully. It still doesn’t.

We turned up at the museum around noon, only to find it closed. Our taxi driver spoke to two employees who were having their lunch outside in the courtyard, and was told the museum would open after lunch. The curator then appeared and insisted that the museum was closed for the day. Our taxi driver pleaded our case but to no avail. We try again next month. What are the odds on success?
