Football in Brief

Millwall turn to Claridge

Millwall yesterday appointed Steve Claridge as their new manager, and according to Jeff Burnige, the chairman, the 39-year-old was his first choice for the position. “He was the only candidate the job was offered to,” Burnige said. “I was looking for a person who had a burning desire to be manager of Millwall and when I met Steve, I found that man.” Claridge, who played 101 matches for the South London club in two spells, has signed a two-year contract and will play “as and when needs must”.

Camara signs up for Celtic

Mo Camara, the Guinea international, has become Gordon Strachan’s first signing for Celtic. The former Burnley full-back, 29, arrives on a free transfer and put pen to paper on a two-year-deal yesterday. Strachan, who took over at Celtic from Martin O’Neill earlier this month, will have further talks with Maciej Zurawski, the Poland striker, today after the 29-year-old Wisla Krakow player spent yesterday having a look around Celtic Park ahead of an expected £2.2 million move.

Jaidi stays put

Radhi Jaidi has agreed in principle to sign a new two-year deal with Bolton Wanderers. The 29-year-old defender is expected to sign after playing for Tunisia in the Confederations Cup. Jaidi has performed an about-turn after demanding a transfer at the end of last season. Bolton had rejected his request to move on, with Phil Gartside, the chairman, stating that he was ready to take action over suggestions that Jaidi’s services had been offered illegally to other clubs.

Park deal close

Park Ji Sung, the South Korea international, is close to completing a move to Manchester United, his agent said yesterday. “We are at the stage where we can soon ring the final bell on the deal,” Kim Jung-il, his Korean agent, said. “We were negotiating with PSV for another two years but Manchester United were anxious to take Park to England.” United want to secure Park’s signature before their pre-season tour to the Far East next month.

Henri Camara’s agent said that the Senegal forward will leave Wolverhampton Wanderers in the next week. Wolves begin pre-season on Monday, but Willie McKay said that the 28-year-old, who spent loan spells with Celtic and Southampton last season, will not have to report back. “Three clubs are interested in Henri and I think he will be gone by the time pre-season begins, ” McKay said.
