Football in Brief

Mido enraged in Egypt victory

Mido, the Tottenham Hotspur striker, protested long and loud at being substituted by Hassan Shehata, the Egypt coach, as the hosts overcame Senegal 2-1 in the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations in Cairo. The 22-year-old was replaced by Amr Zaki, but his coach’s decision proved to be inspired because the new man headed in the winner with ten minutes to go. Ahmed Hassan had put Egypt ahead with a twice-taken penalty in the first half, but Mamadou Niang equalised with a header.

Ivory Coast will provide the opposition in Friday’s final after Didier Drogba scored in a 1-0 defeat of Nigeria in Alexandria.

Gianfranco Zola, the former Chelsea forward, made a scoring return to English football last night in a fundraising game for Macclesfield Town. Zola, 39, led an all-star team in front of a crowd of 4,377, twice the average gate, who saw a Macclesfield Legends XI run out 5-2 winners at Moss Rose. Other big names playing included Christian Karembeu, a World Cup winner with France, Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes .
