Football in Brief

LENNON WORRY

Aaron Lennon, the Tottenham Hotspur winger, is a doubt for England’s Euro 2008 qualifying matches against FYR Macedonia and Croatia next month after injuring a knee in training. Lennon sat out Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. Martin Jol, the head coach, said: “It could be a little tear in his cartilage. If it is a minor injury, he could take a restful week and maybe be back quickly, but if not, he won’t play for the next couple of weeks.”

FA MUST STEP IN

One of the leading football agents in England has urged the FA to police his profession effectively and flush out any corruption. After reports that BBC Panorama investigators duped agents and others into discussing illegal payments, Phil Smith, the chief operating officer of the First Artist agency, said the spectre of impropriety looms over everyone in the industry. “We want to get it dealt with,” he said.
