Five of the best damn good pubs in Scotland

Clachaig Inn
Clachaig Inn

Clachaig Inn, nr Glencoe

Three hundred years deep in the glen itself, down the road signed off the A82, 5km from Glencoe village. The pub (the Boots Bar), with its wood-burning stoves, is welcoming. Back door best for muddy footwear or those averse to sofas. Many real ales and many real climbers and walkers. Handy if you’re in the hostel 2km down road or camping. Good, inexpensive accommodation.

The Old Bridge Inn, Aviemore

SIMON LEES

The Old Bridge Inn, Aviemore

Old like it says, but one of those homely inn-like inns that completely takes you in. Excellent eclectic menu offered under the chef Chris McCall. Cask ales, artisan beers; kids, skiers, walkers. Very much part of the local music scene, so it also rocks. Kids’ menu. Open seven days, lunch and dinner. In summer, tables available over road by the river. Hostel is adjacent.

The Isle of Whithorn
The Isle of Whithorn
ALAMY

The Steam Packet Inn, Isle of Whithorn

The hub of this atmospheric wee village (not an island as the name suggests) is at the end of the road south. On the harbour (with picture windows), which fills and empties with the tide. Great for ales and food. Seven inexpensive rooms upstairs. An all-round happy hostelry. Dog-friendly and close to the River Dee.

The Craftsman Company, Aberdeen

An exemplary craft-beer alehouse/café/restaurant on Guild Street, near the harbour. Selection of beers changes weekly — Scottish and English craft breweries and 15 beers on offer at any one time on tap. Huge range of bottled or canned also available. Excellent, wholesome food from breakfast to supper. Open seven days.

Lion & Unicorn in Thornhill Scotland
Lion & Unicorn in Thornhill Scotland

Lion & Unicorn, Thornhill

Open since 1635. They come from miles around for pub grub and sizzling steaks. Three cosy dining areas, open fires, flowers and a real garden. Changing menu (including a gluten-free one), not too fancy, just nice. Open seven days, noon-9pm.
