First class reward for best teachers

Rather than demanding that our teachers have good grades, we should reward those teachers whose pupils get them

Sir, A teaching graduate with a PhD or first-class degree is usually much less likely to appreciate the learning difficulties of the less able child than the teacher who has struggled to achieve a more modest qualification (letters, Jan 20).

Sir, Academic skills and teaching skills are different. Rather than demanding that our teachers have good grades, we should reward those teachers whose pupils get them.

Give a teacher a minimum wage, with a bonus calculated according to the numbers of all the different pass and fail grades obtained by his or her pupils.
