Sir, Last year a million people missed the self-assessment tax return date. This year Revenue & Customs has embarked upon an advertising campaign costing millions to ensure that the forms are completed on time, thereby losing a potential income of £100 million in fines.
PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates that nearly a million people will still miss the date. Has the advertising been cost-effective? Who will eventually foot this bill?
As if that is not enough, the accountants are encouraging more research to target groups that are missing the deadline.
Sounds like more advertising next year.
Send out the form, give the closing date and then fine those not responding in time. The result of £100 million in fines plus saving on advertising equals lower tax for the rest.

Sir, I submitted my tax return electronically on Wednesday last. Thirty seconds later I received an e-mail acknowledging its receipt, stating that it was being processed.
On Friday, my tax rebate was paid into my bank account.
