Prostate drug breakthrough
A drug for advanced prostate cancer can improve survival by 37% if combined with standard therapy, according to a trial funded by Cancer Research UK. Professor Nicholas James, the trial’s chief investigator, said: “It’s a once-in-a-career feeling.” Abiraterone, known as Zytiga, stops testosterone reaching the prostate.

Hilary Mantel, the Booker prize-winning author, has revealed she does “a lot” of work in her sleep. Mantel has recorded her dreams in 106 handwritten diaries. “It’s a way to get extra work in,” she told the Financial Times.

Terror victim sues car firm
A survivor of the Westminster terrorist attack, which killed five people, is suing the company that rented a car to perpetrator Khalid Masood. Francisco Lopes, 26, is seeking compensation for injuries and mental trauma after being hit by the car in March.

Beavers eager to clean rivers
Reintroducing the beaver could help clean up rivers, prevent flooding and reduce soil loss. Professor Richard Brazier, of Exeter University, said preliminary results from a trial suggested that muddy water flowing into an area where the animals live was three times cleaner when it left.

Zoe back after lover’s death
The broadcaster Zoe Ball thanked listeners for their support yesterday when she returned to her BBC Radio 2 show, four weeks after her boyfriend Billy Yates, 40, was found dead at his London home. Ball, 46, separated from husband Norman Cook, the DJ known as Fatboy Slim, in 2016.

Three held over Semtex haul
Three men have been arrested in Dublin after explosives were found in a vehicle by police investigating “dissident republican activity”. Armed garda units seized Semtex explosives and detonators in the north inner city. The men were detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
