This must be a strong contender for the best of Eastwood’s 25 films as a director. He plays a lonely, crusty old fight trainer, who helps a no-hoper, Maggie (Hilary Swank), realise her ambition of being a boxer. A thoughtful and emotionally powerful drama.

Taylor Hackford’s life of Ray Charles is a warts-and-all biopic. It’s a harrowing tale of one man overcoming many obstacles — poverty, blindness and drugs — to become a great star. The music is wonderful, and so is Jamie Foxx’s performance, but the script is average.
