Sir, Michael Moszynski (letter, Sept 1) quite rightly reminds us of the great sacrifices made by Poland during the Second World War, and that Polish servicemen were involved in the fight against the Axis through the entire duration of the conflict.
However, Poland was not “the only nation to fight by Britain’s side from the first day of the war to the last”. The nations of the Indian sub-continent also fought alongside Britain from the first day to the last, and the all-volunteer Indian Army was involved in every big battlefront including Dunkirk, El Alamein and Burma, as well as Monte Cassino.

Sir, Mr Moszynski might like to know that there is a memorial to Polish airmen whose plane crashed in the Pennines as they were returning from a mission in the Second World War. It is located at a spot near where the crash occurred on the slopes of Buckden Pike in Yorkshire.
