Field fatigue

Sir, England may have won the battle for the Ashes but, based on our “flat pitch” form (at Lords and the Oval), we would have lost this series had it been played anywhere else in the world. Looking forward, I would be more optimistic as a supporter of Australia than of England.

Sir, During a match, 40 per cent of a cricketer’s time is spent, on average, waiting to bat; and unless he has a long spell of bowling, most of the other time he is in the field waiting for the occasional reason to chase a ball. Their “exhaustion” (Sport, Aug 21) certainly doesn’t come from physical activity. Maybe it comes from boredom.
