Ferguson recalls school cup win

SIR ALEX FERGUSON was reunited with a former school football team-mate yesterday and admitted that “he was a much better player than me”.

The Manchester United manager was reunited with Dan Whitelaw, 60, as he opened the newly refurbished Govan High School. Sir Alex was and Mr Whitelaw were among the star players when the school won the Govan Fair Cup in 1955.

Sir Alex said: “It’s great being here and it brings back many happy memories of my school days. I remember playing for the school team alongside Danny. He was a great player, a big strong inside forward. When there are two brothers in football, they always say the one who didn’t make it was the better player.”

Mr Whitelaw, who went on to become managing director of an engineering company, said: “I still remember him missing a crucial goal against Strathbungo but I also remember what a tremendous player he was.”

Govan High’s most famous “old boy” officially opened the new school building, in the shadow of Ibrox Stadium yesterday in front of more than 500 pupils and teachers past and present. He received a thunderous applause as he unveiled a plaque which will take pride of place in the foyer after the £4 million refurbishment.
