A brother-in-law of film star Colin Farrell is planning to contest the next local elections for Fine Gael, standing in a ward in the Dublin Bay South constituency.

Steven Mannion Farrell, who campaigned for the same-sex marriage referendum in 2015 and who is married to the actor’s older brother, Eamon Farrell, hopes to stand in the Pembroke South Docks ward.

The Dublin artist married Eamon Farrell, a co-founder of the National Performing Arts School in Grand Canal Quay, in 2009. Colin Farrell was his brother’s best man at the wedding in Vancouver.

The couple, who live in Sandymount, attended the Fine Gael leadership election count at Dublin’s Mansion House on Friday. They had supported Leo Varadkar’s candidacy and were guests at the new Fine Gael leader’s 38th birthday party earlier this year.

Fine Gael has two of the eight councillors in Pembroke South Docks, Paddy McCartan and Kieran Binchy. The local organisation plans to position Mannion Farrell as an area representative in the ward in order to increase his profile ahead of the 2019 local elections.

Varadkar said at his first press conference on Friday night that he wants to expand the party’s membership, particularly focusing on younger recruits by using social media platforms.

Mannion Farrell and his husband produced a Yes Equality campaign video for the same-sex marriage referendum and held a fundraising event at their home, which Varadkar attended.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer, an Element Pictures film starring Colin Farrell, won the award for best screenplay at Cannes film festival last week. The Irish actor has again teamed up with Yorgos Lanthimos, his director on The Lobster, and appears alongside Nicole Kidman and Barry Keoghan in what has been described as a disturbing thriller.
