Fanny and Alexander

Ingmar Bergman, 15 (1982)

Preparing to spend Christmas moaning that there is nothing worth watching on TV? Then do yourself a favour and buy this remastered version of Ingmar Bergman’s three-hour account of a rich Swedish family’s upheaval after the death of the father, and the effect of the austere new stepfather on the young children. It is bawdy, earthy, joyous, elegant, beautifully detailed, and even a bit creepy, and deserves a place in your stocking. The only disappointment — where is the five-hour version, as it was originally broadcast on TV?
