James McMullan was in a celebratory mood as he stepped out of the Barrowboy & Banker for a quick cigarette on Saturday evening.

It was a rare night out in London Bridge after he had worked for 16 hours a day to create a business that he hoped would revolutionise online education. He meant to leave his friends only briefly but was stopped from rejoining them by the pub’s bouncer. They reassured him they would be out in a minute anyway. That was when the terrorists struck.

Mr McMullan, 32, an entrepreneur who had gained a £1.2 million investment for his business, was named yesterday by his sister, Melissa, as one of the seven people murdered. The nature of his death is unclear, but the terrorists ran their van into the railings next to the pub as they moved from killing people with a vehicle to attacking them with knives shortly after 10pm.

He is one of two named victims confirmed as dead. Christine Archibald, 30, a Canadian charity worker, died in her fiancé’s arms after she was hit on the bridge; a third victim is a French citizen. Sara Zelenak, 21, a nanny from Brisbane who was separated from her friends during the attack, is among those missing.

Ms McMullan, 30, wept as she said that police had not formally identified her brother but had found his bank card on one of the bodies. “While our pain will never diminish, it is important for us to all carry on with our lives in direct opposition to those who would try to destroy us and remember their hatred is the refuge of small-minded individuals and will only breed more,” she said.

“This [hatred] is not a course we will follow, despite our loss . . . There will only ever be one James.”

Police said that they were delaying naming most of the dead because some victims were not British. They added: “Of the 48 people taken to hospital, 36 are being cared for in London hospitals with 18 in a critical condition.”

SARA ZELENAK, MISSING

An Australian working as a nanny in London who had been planning to stay in to babysit, but was able to go out after the children’s grandmother offered to look after them instead. She was last seen by friends on London Bridge.

Mark Wallace, Ms Zelenak’s stepfather, said that he could barely think from worry. Ms Zelenak, 21, from Brisbane, usually made contact with her parents every day but had not done so since the attack.

“I feel terrible, I don’t know what my name is, I can’t think,” Mr Wallace told the Herald Sun newspaper. Julie Wallace, Sara’s mother, made plans to leave Australia last night to try to track down their daughter.

SEBASTIEN BELANGER, MISSING
The French chef, 36, was last seen by friends drinking at the Boro Bistro near Borough Market. Two of his friends were able to flee without injury but his fate remains unknown. His friends are convinced that he is alive but have printed leaflets to appeal to anyone who might know where he is.

Mr Belanger, from Angers in western France, had been watching the Champions League final at the Barrowboy and Banker pub and later went with friends to another bar
near by.

Gerda Lapinskaite, Mr Belanger’s girlfriend, was also handing out flyers near hospitals yesterday. She has not heard from him since Saturday and told Sky News: “He is the nicest person in the world. I really, really want to see him again.”

CHRISTINE ARCHIBALD, DIED
Family members said that the 30-year-old charity worker from Castlegar, British Columbia, died on the bridge in the arms of her fiancé, Tyler Ferguson. His sister, Cassie Ferguson Rowe, said her brother felt “broken into a million pieces”. “In a split second his entire life was ripped away from him,” she wrote. “Hearing his painful sobs on the phone while he’s alone trying to deal with this tears me apart.”

Ms Archibald’s family said: “We grieve the loss of our beautiful, loving daughter and sister. She had room in her heart for everyone and believed strongly that every person was to be valued and respected.

“She lived this belief, working in a shelter for the homeless, until she moved to Europe to be with her fiancé. She would have had no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death. Please honour her by making your community a better place. Volunteer your time and labour . . . tell them Chrissy sent you.”

Mr Echeverría, 39, was the subject of a poster arranged by his family, who have hired a private detective to search hospitals for him, according to media reports. Joaquín Echeverría, his father, wrote on Facebook that police had asked for fingerprints. “That’s not a good sign,” he wrote.

He was reportedly with Christine Delcros, his girlfriend, at the time of the attack.

Nathalie Cros Brohan, Ms Delcros’s sister, wrote on Facebook that she was coming to London from France. “My sister is seriously injured and in hospital,” she said. “I appeal to anyone who has news of Xavier Thomas, who is missing. He is not one of the four French people who have been found.”

JAMES MCMULLAN, DIED
Named by his sister as having died on London Bridge after he stepped out of the Barrowboy and Banker pub to smoke a cigarette. The entrepreneur, 32, who was hoping to launch a pair of education businesses entitled Universibly and Crowducator, had tried to rejoin his friends but was stopped by a bouncer. Melissa McMullan, 30, said that his friends told him that they would finish their drinks and come out. “That was literally two minutes before the incident,” she told Southwark News.

Simon McMullan, 61, their father, said he would continue his son’s work. “At this point in time the subject is too raw. I’m just going to try to keep the business that he was doing alive. He was working on it for two years. He was on the verge of signing his first contract, a $1.5 million deal. It will radically change the face of education. I am going to continue his work. My son really was an exceptional man.”
