Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, the north London clubs, were drawn together in a Capital One Cup third-round draw last night that also pitted Aston Villa against Birmingham City, their West Midlands neighbours.

Crystal Palace were paired with Charlton Athletic, their south London rivals, but the tie at White Hart Lane will catch the most attention as Tottenham and Arsenal meet for the fourth time in ten seasons in the competition.

The timing of the fixture, in the week beginning Monday, September 21, may be an issue for many fans of both clubs as Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement, runs from the Tuesday evening until the following night.

West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City each needed a penalty shoot-out to see off lower-division opponents in the second round last night.

Port Vale, the Sky Bet League One team, held West Brom to a goalless draw at The Hawthorns but Richard Duffy, the Vale defender, fired over the crossbar to suffer the only failure in the shoot-out. Stoke won 8-7 in a shoot-out against Luton Town after they drew 1-1 at Kenilworth Road.

The Sky Bet League Two team fell behind when Stephen Ireland set up Jon Walters to score but Cameron McGeehan levelled in stoppage time from a cross by Scott Griffiths, who was the only player to fail from the spot, striking the crossbar.

Alex Neil, the Norwich City manager, refused to comment on reports that Lewis Grabban, the striker who is wanted by Bournemouth, had walked out of the team hotel when he heard he would not be playing away to Rotherham United, a match the Barclays Premier League team won 2-1.

Shrewsbury Town, of League One, took Crystal Palace to extra time at Selhurst Park but the Premier League club won 4-1 after extra time.

Matt Tootle gave Shrewsbury an early lead but Palace responded through penalties by Dwight Gayle and Glenn Murray. The scoring was completed by Lee Chung Yong and Wilfred Zaha.

Joe Dodoo, the young forward, scored a hat-trick on his Leicester City debut as his team won 4-1 away to Bury.
