Everton keen on loan move for Arsenal’s Philippe Senderos

David Moyes resurrects interest in Arsenal and Switzerland defender, six months after pulling out of a deal to sign him

Everton have resurrected their interest in Philippe Senderos, six months after they pulled out of a deal to sign the Arsenal and Switzerland defender.

David Moyes, the Everton manager, is trying to sign Senderos, 24, on loan after he sold Lucas Neill to Galatasaray for £750,000. Senderos’s move to Goodison Park broke down last time over the fee, but he is out of contract in the summer.

Decent bets

Arsenal are monitoring Chris Smalling, 20, who has made only one start in the Premier League for Fulham. The defender, who has 18 months left on his contract, has featured mainly in the Europa League this season since joining from Maidstone United, of the Ryman League Premier Division 1½ years ago. Fulham claim that they have had no approach.

Sunderland hope to complete the £2 million signing of Matthew Kilgallon from Sheffield United this week. The defender was understood to be on Wearside yesterday, where he was shown around the training complex. Kilgallon had talked of seeing out his contract, which ends this summer, after interest from Newcastle United and Burnley. Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, also confirmed his interest in Guy Demel, the Hamburg and Ivory Coast defender.

Sporting are considering a bid for Nadir Belhadj, the Portsmouth left back. The Algeria defender cost about £4 million when he moved from Lens a year ago.

Manchester United have invited Even Hovland, the 20-year-old defender who plays for Sogndal, of Norway, to have a second trial.

Dead certs

Burnley have signed Fr?d?ric Nimani on loan from Monaco, with an option to buy the 21-year-old striker for £3.5 million in the summer. He scored six goals in 28 games last season.

Jan Mucha, the Legia Warsaw goalkeeper, has agreed a pre-contract with Everton to join in the summer.

Birmingham City have failed to sign Maxi L?pez, the former Barcelona forward who has joined Catania. The Argentinian had been on loan at Grêmio, of Brazil, from FC Moscow.

Danny Simpson, the defender, has joined Newcastle from Manchester United for about £750,000.

Long shots

Nottingham Forest have rejected an offer for James Perch, the defender, from Newcastle United.

West Bromwich Albion are monitoring David Healy, the striker who wants to leave Sunderland after making six appearances as a substitute for them this season.
