AN internationally- acclaimed photographer whose shoots have featured some of the biggest names in the world, from Sophia Loren to Paul McCartney, is to be inducted into the hall of fame at the 10th annual Scottish fashion awards.

David Eustace, who has captured a glittering array of stars from the world of art, cinema, music and design for top fashion magazines and leading brands, joins an illustrious list including Stella Tennant, Rankin and Dame Vivienne Westwood for making a significant contribution to the Scottish fashion industry.

Eustace, who was given up for adoption at birth and left school with only an art O-grade at the age of 16, was a 27-year-old prison officer in Barlinnie when he first picked up a camera, quickly featuring in titles including Vogue and GQ after graduating from art college.

Hailing from the east end of Glasgow, he was described by one artistic director at a top magazine as a cross between Billy Connolly and an Australian backpacker when he arrived in London in the early 1990s.

Eustace, who will be inducted at the awards on Thursday, has received high praise for his photography, with famous sitters also including Tracey Emin, Sir Peter Blake, James Earl Jones, and Radiohead.

The event, co-hosted by awards founder Tessa Hartmann and Scottish secretary David Mundell, will also honour Pringle of Scotland, which is celebrating its bicentennial year.

Hartmann said: “David Eustace is known as a photographer’s photographer and is respected in both worlds of art and commerce. His journey started with fashion shooting for the world’s top fashion titles and glossies, and progressed to working with some of the biggest brands in the world.

“His sitters read like a Who’s Who in the world of art, cinema, music and design. From exhibitions in New York to being the first photographer in the Scottish Gallery’s 173-year history to host a solo exhibition, his portfolio and indeed creativity is perpetually evolving and always offers a delicacy and simple honest voice.”

The awards, which aim to highlight the Scottish contribution to the wider UK and international fashion industry, will honour Pringle of Scotland, based in the Scottish borders — the birthplace of the British knitwear industry. It will receive the founders award as it celebrates its Scottish heritage and two centuries of design.
