Erik ten Hag: Marcus Rashford could become unstoppable

Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United manager, said Marcus Rashford could become “unstoppable” if he continued to show a hunger to improve his skillset.

After another sparkling performance in United’s 3-1 FA Cup third-round win over Everton, Rashford declared that he was in the best form of his career. The England forward scored a stoppage-time penalty — meaning he has scored in five successive games for the first time — having provided crosses for his side’s first two goals.

“He can work on his weaker foot, on his heading, but on other skills he is very good,” Ten Hag said. “It is more about bringing him in the right position and that as a team we create the right spaces for him, so that he can bring his strengths. Then he is unstoppable with his speed, his dribbles, his directness.”

Rashford has now scored 13 goals for United this season and the 25-year-old hopes his return to form can help the club end their six-year wait for a major trophy. “It’s probably the best that I’ve been, so I feel good,” Rashford said.

“I’m getting into positions and areas to score goals. If I keep creating chances, I feel like I’ll keep scoring.

“The aim is to win trophies. That’s why we do what we do and why we work so hard. Ultimately, we want to be winning silverware. Hopefully this season we get a chance to do that.”

Everton have won only once in their past 12 matches, but after the abject 4-1 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday, the away side at least delivered an improved performance for their manager, Frank Lampard.

“We deserved to get a result,” Lampard said. “The fans will respect you when you give everything for the club.”

Everton face an anxious wait over the fitness of Alex Iwobi, who left Old Trafford on crutches after suffering an ankle ligament injury following a tackle by Tyrell Malacia in the second half.
