Ennis combines talents to win European Cup

Jessica Ennis, the in-form heptathlete, led the Great Britain and Northern Ireland women’s team to their first victory in the European Cup Combined Events Super League in Szczecin, Poland.

The 21-year-old psychology graduate, who has already equalled the UK high jump record of 1.95 metres and beaten Denise Lewis’s national under23 heptathlon record this summer, contributed 6,399 points as Britain amassed 18,329 to win by a colossal margin of 1,040 from Russia, the defending champions.

Ennis, the European junior heptathlon champion and Commonwealth bronze medal-winner, led the individual competition throughout the two days. She was supported by Kelly Sotherton, who was second with 6,229, Julie Hollman, tenth with 5,701, and Ros Gonse, seventeenth with 5,501. Ukraine were third, with Poland fourth ahead of Greece, France, Finland and Sweden.
