Sir, The question as to the merits of English music can be settled fairly simply by examining the number of English works ever played in foreign concert halls. I doubt that the total is more than a dozen a year. Foreign audiences and promoters are the most effective and impartial judges.
As Beethoven remarked: “The English love music very much. What a pity their love is not returned.”
