England put Shine on the ball

England have appointed Kevin Shine as the successor to fast-bowling coach Troy Cooley.

Shine follows Mark Garaway from Somerset into the England ranks and will take over when Cooley leaves to take up his new post with Australia.

Ian Blackwell, England’s Somerset all-rounder, who worked with Shine at Taunton, said: “He’s very much a bio-mechanical bowling coach.

“He is a top-class, level-four coach who will bring something along the lines of what Troy Cooley has brought - he will be an added bonus to the unit.”

Shine’s appointment takes the Somerset contingent to four in the England camp, following Garaway’s elevation as the new team analyst and with Blackwell and Marcus Trescothick currently among the touring party in India.

Shine, a former Hampshire and Middlesex seam bowler, had a successful time initially as Somerset’s head coach - guiding them to second in the 2001 county championship table and back-to-back C&G Trophy finals in his first two years in charge.

Somerset’s fortunes subsequently dipped in both forms of the game and Garaway became the county’s first-team coach.

Shine took a new role as director of development and coaching with special responsibility for the England and Wales Cricket Board’s regional academy based at Taunton and was Somerset’s second-team coach last summer.

Shine, who will take up his new position on March 13 and is expected to join the squad in India soon afterwards, said: “This role offers a great personal challenge, and one I am looking forward to immensely.

“It will be a great honour to work with some of the best bowlers in the world and also to help the wealth of emerging talent.”

John Carr, the ECB’s director of England cricket, added: “We are delighted that Kevin will be joining the ECB elite coaching team as fast-bowling coach.

“He has been working very closely with Troy Cooley and other members of the ECB fast-bowling group and has already played an important role this winter working at the National Cricket Centre with the Academy squad seam bowlers and other senior county bowlers.

“Kevin is ideally placed to lead ECB’s fast-bowling programme and to oversee the development of England fast bowlers.”
