England player ratings

Rob Green (West Ham) caps 6, age 29 5/10
Making his fourth consecutive appearance, he must feel that he could at least become substitute goalkeeper at next year's World Cup. Horrible error early on almost let in Milivoje Novakovic and he was at fault for Macedonia's goal. Good fist on second-half cross.

Glen Johnson (Liverpool) 17, 25 5/10
Even Gary Neville must fancy his chances of a recall after watching Johnson's poor defensive display, which saw him caught out several times in the first half. Looks good going forward but when it comes to the big games, England need him to do better at the day job.

Matthew Upson (West Ham) 16, 30 7/10
Knows he can stake a World Cup finals claim with John Terry and Rio Ferdinand becoming increasingly injury prone. Looked comfortable alongside Terry but, in fairness, had little to do. We will learn more about his abilities when he faces Eduardo and Croatia this week.

John Terry (Chelsea, capt) 55, 28 7/10
With Slovenia mostly attacking down the flanks, Terry had little to do. A routine day at the office in defence and almost as routine up front until the bar stopped his header from Steven Gerrard's corner. Would have been his third goal in seven games.

Ashley Cole (Chelsea) 75, 28 6/10
Had one overlapping run past Gerrard early on, which almost brought a goalscoring chance, but was mostly happy to stay in a defensive role. Maybe he is still being advised by former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who did not like him crossing the halfway line.

Shaun Wright-Phillips (Man C) 32, 27 4/10
Absolutely anonymous for the first 45 minutes. In the absence of Arsenal's Theo Walcott, he had another opportunity to show that he could be his country's flying right-winger. But never got into the game and was lucky to make it to half-time.

Gareth Barry (Man City) 32, 28 5/10
Showed his enthusiasm by running 50 yards to win back the ball after losing it at the top end of the pitch. But did not seem to have a defined role in the team, either as holding man or creative midfielder. Mark Hughes' smart signing can do a lot better.

Frank Lampard (Chelsea) 73, 31 6/10
His penalty made it three goals in four England games. The Chelsea man was a subdued presence for most of the first half, staying deep rather than foraging forward from midfield. Taken off at half-time to keep him sharp and hungry for Wednesday's key fixture.

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) 75, 29 6/10
Covets the central midfield role but Fabio Capello is the third England manager to hand him the bridesmaid's role out on the left. Came inside whenever possible and provided an outside-of-the-boot cross for the penalty. Taken off at half-time.

Wayne Rooney (Man Utd) 54, 23 6/10
Rooney assured us beforehand that he does not dive, but he won a controversial first-half penalty when he went tumbling over. Hit the post from three yards out. Missed another sitter after a great run and cross from substitute Aaron Lennon.

Emile Heskey (Aston Villa) 55, 31 6/10
Has invented a new position, the non-goalscoring centre-forward. Has only seven goals in 55 appearances, just one more than Terry after an equal number of caps. Did his usual efficient holding job up front but never threatened to score. Hooked at half-time.

Substitutes
Jermain Defoe received the loudest applause of the half-time substitutes and produced a smashing finish to make it five goals in three games. Aaron Lennon played the ball in and was the most exhilarating player of the night. Joleon Lescott was solid in Upson's spot and Michael Carrick seamlessly replaced Lampard. James Milner saw little of the ball.
