England player ratings

ANDREW BOYERS

MIKE BROWN 6/10
Harlequins Caps 38 Age 29
Ht 6ft Wt 14st
Courageous and often composed, but he’s simply not the same level of footballer as Alex Goode and he will not be watching replays of the incident when Huget rounded him for the try

JACK NOWELL 5/10
Exeter Caps 9 Age 22
Ht 5ft 10in Wt 13st 10lb
At least his blue hat was prominent, but he is not set up by the men inside in the way that could show how much talent he possesses

JONATHAN JOSEPH 5/10
Bath Caps 12 Age 24
Ht 6ft Wt 14st 5lb
He looked strangely laboured here, and lacking zip. Hard to blame the outside-centre but he must find himself, and rapidly

LUTHER BURRELL 7/10
Northampton Caps 13 Age 27
Ht 6ft 3in Wt 17st 2lb
He was practically the only England player to get over the advantage line. He tackled well and obliterated the bad notion that he would not be in the final squad

JONNY MAY 5/10
Gloucester Caps 14 Age 25
Ht 6ft 1in Wt 14st
It must have been horrible to be out on the wing, May never got the chance and struggled badly on occasions

GEORGE FORD 4/10
Bath Caps 12 Age 22
Ht 5ft 9in Wt 13st 3lb
It may have been a rare off-day but an off-day it certainly was, he was hesitant and kicked badly and nothing was happening around him

BEN YOUNGS 4/10
Leicester Caps 49 Age 25
Ht 5ft 10in Wt 14st 7lb
Who would have shone behind this England pack? Not many, and so Youngs and also Danny Care deserve credit for applying themselves

JOE MARLER 4/10
Harlequins Caps 32 Age 25
Ht 6ft Wt 18st 4lb
Surprisingly outplayed up front, he never looked happy and never resembled his reliable self

TOM YOUNGS 4/10
Leicester Caps 23 Age 28
Ht 5ft 9in Wt 16st 1lb
His lineout throwing was extremely poor throughout and clearly he was part of an attack in retreat. An explosion waiting to happen

DAN COLE 6/10
Leicester Caps 51 Age 28
Ht 6ft 2in Wt 18st 8lb
He must stop conceding penalties and he found the French props a little too powerful for him on the night

JOE LAUNCHBURY 4/10
Wasps Caps 23 Age 24
Ht 6ft 6in Wt 18st 8lb
After so long out of the game this was a hard one to play in but he was outweighed, outplayed and rather anonymous against bigger men

COURTNEY LAWES 5/10
Northampton Caps 39 Age 26
Ht 6ft 7in Wt 18st 8lb
Disappointing performance from such a good player. He could not marshal the lineout, and not nearly as conspicuous around the field as usual

JAMES HASKELL 5/10
Wasps Caps 59 Age 30
Ht 6ft 4in Wt 17st 13lb
Suffered along with the rest, but at least made a show of contesting the breakdown, although he was a little one-paced on the night

CHRIS ROBSHAW 4/10
Harlequins Caps 38 Age 29
Ht 6ft 2in Wt 17st 5lb
The captain had no real effect on the game, tended to be fending off in the loose play and it really is time for a change in the position

BILLY VUNIPOLA 4/10
Saracens Caps 18 Age 22
Ht 6ft 2in Wt 19st 12lb
He was completely subdued and hardly figured anywhere outside the forward battle. We know that he can do a lot better than this and he must start doing so immediately. Short of a gallop

REPLACEMENTS
A few rare items of good news, even though they came from the likes of Easter, Cipriani and Twelvetrees, who may well not make the final England squad. At least the replacements seemed fit, the starters looked as if they had been on the beer
