End of pioneer satellite station

The satellite station that beamed the first television programme across the Atlantic is to be shut down. Goonhilly Earth Station in Cornwall, which opened in 1962 and received early transmissions from the Telstar satellite, is no longer commercially viable, says BT, the owner. Ninety jobs will go. The station handled the first transatlantic broadcast of a television programme in 1967, when footage of the Beatles performing All You Need Is Love was transmitted.
