A Briton jailed in Egypt for smuggling illegal painkiller tablets for her partner was expected to be released within 24 hours under a presidential pardon, her family and lawyer said yesterday.

Laura Plummer, 33, was sentenced to three years in the resort of Hurghada on Boxing Day for trying to smuggle Tramadol pills, an opioid banned in Egypt, through the airport.

She said that her Egyptian partner, Omar Saad, also 33, needed them for his bad back.

Her family said they had been told she had received a pardon from President Sisi in an amnesty to mark the anniversary of the Tahrir Square uprising in 2011.

Her lawyer, Mohamed Osman, said: “I’m 95 per cent sure she will be released soon, though nothing is confirmed.”

Ms Plummer, a shop worker from Hull, was arrested on October 9.

She claimed that she had no idea the pills were banned in Egypt.

The Foreign Office said: “Our embassy remains in regular contact with the Egyptian authorities.”
