Educating dyslectics

Sir, You report (June 12) yet another supposed “cure” for dyslexia. No one can doubt the scorn and criticism suffered by dyslectics, especially in schools, at the hands of those who lack imagination or empathy.

However, enough high achievers are dyslectic to show dyslexia is not a defect but a difference. No doubt the name is used loosely for a number of different conditions, but classic dyslexia is supposed to be a difference in the distribution of brain-function between the hemispheres of the brain, facilitating some abilities and inhibiting others.

Education of dyslectics needs to be directed to developing their special talents, not trying to make them poor imitations of non-dyslectics.
