Madeleine Shaw has a big following in the booming healthy eating scene, and it’s easy to see why — her 30-minute meals are simple and delicious, without any unpronounceable ingredients from the health-food store. For more indulgent fare, check out our guide to the best wood-fired pizzas in the UK; the doughy base really is a thing of the past. Or make the perfect pizza at home, with Giorgio Locatelli’s handy guide. Finally, for Mother’s Day, revel in the childhood recollections of some of our top chefs, and try the recipes inspired by their mums.

Where to eat

When you walk into the glam new fish and chippy the Scallop Shell, in Bath, you’re greeted by a cast-iron Victorian bath holding the catch of the day. I tried gurnard and chips — a delicious alternative to the traditional cod. It was recently named Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year, and the result is long queues, but you can wait next door at the New Inn — and even bring your drink with you when a table comes free. There’s a great wine list, too.
