Cherries are to go on sale next month — two months earlier than usual — priced at £89.99 a kilo, or about 95p each. Those desperate to get the first bite of the summer season are already on a waiting list for the fruit from a Spanish grower who uses heated tunnels, according to Harrods.
“They are very expensive but . . . a lot of work goes into producing them and they are all hand picked,” a spokesman said. The British cherry season runs through June and July.
