TWO of the boldest entrepreneurs of the past 30 years are to discuss how they came to succeed at a special Sunday Times event in Manchester next month.
Jim Ratcliffe, boss of Ineos, and Peter Hargreaves, who built Hargreaves Lansdown into a FTSE 100 financial services giant, will discuss their careers and take questions from an audience of business leaders at Manchester Business School on September 8.
The evening — Against the grain: how two entrepreneurs outsmarted their business rivals and built billion-pound companies — rounds off a year of celebrations of The Sunday Times Business section’s first five decades, an anniversary shared by Manchester Business School. The event is supported by the accountancy firm PwC.
The two businessmen have strong roots in northwest England. Ratcliffe, who has created a chemicals empire with sales of $54bn a year that is now headquartered in Switzerland, spent his first 10 years in the Manchester suburb of Failsworth. A former BP executive, he went into private equity, and then built up Ineos by swooping on assets cast off by oil giants and big chemical companies.

Hargreaves, whose financial services house now has a market value of £5.2bn, was brought up in Clitheroe, Lancashire.
