Mexican shrimp soup

Brattish students Tenoch (Diego Luna) and Julio (Gael García Bernal) wake up with hangovers and the dim recollection that the previous night’s tequila session went too far. They managed to lure Tenoch’s sexy cousin Luisa (Maribel Verdú) into bed, but the two friends prove to be more interested in each other than Luisa. In the cold light of the morning after not even shrimp soup, the classic Mexican hangover cure, can ease their squirming embarrassment.

Grind the pumpkin seeds and coriander to a fine powder in a blender. Fry the cumin, chilli, garlic and onions briefly in olive oil, then add the stock, vegetables and bay leaves. Boil for 20 minutes, then add the prawns. Boil for 5 more minutes, then remove the soup from the heat and season it well.

Put in 4 bowls, sprinkle each with a teaspoonful of pumpkin and coriander powder and serve with a slice of lime each to squeeze over the soup.
