Dunfermline unlikely to edge out Icelandic visitors

Dunfermline are too short at a general 1-2 to progress to the first round proper of the Uefa Cup against Hafnarfjordur on Thursday evening and could well be surprised by their Icelandic visitors.

Though the tie is finely balanced after a 2-2 draw in Reykjavik, and Dunfermline may feel they have the psychological edge after retrieving a two-goal deficit, Hafnarfjordur still have plenty to recommend them.

They lead the Icelandic league, and while that may be an ordinary standard, Dunfermline prop up the Scottish Premier League with just a point from three outings.

Nor will Dunfermline forget a dire start to the first leg when conceding two goals in two minutes in the first half. Not until three minutes from time was Andrius Skerla able to save the day with an equaliser.

Add in to the mix that this return leg will be staged at St Johnstone’s McDiarmid Park because the Icelandic team declined to play on Dunfermline’s plastic surface at East End Park, and there is a plausible argument for supporting the visitors at a big price.

Skybet offer 6-1 about Hafnarfjordur, and that is a sporting play in what could be a closer game than the odds suggest.

Skybet are also best about the draw at 11-4, with Victor Chandler’s 4-7 the pick of the odds about the home side.
